Your Gmail account is getting an upgrade that might stop you sending emails

Millions of Gmail users will soon see a monumental change coming to their inboxes. The latest planned update from Google could actually stop you from sending emails. That’s because you will soon be able to make a phone call to contacts from inside the email app on iPhone and Android.

As spotted by The Verge, it seems this upgrade will end the need to switch from your inbox to another service, like Google Meet or FaceTime, when you decide that it’s easier to speak to someone.

Once your iOS or Android app has received the upgrade, a new option will appear that makes it easy to call Gmail contacts from your inbox. If you don’t have a mobile or home number for a Gmail contact, or simply can’t be bothered to type out a lengthy email response… the call feature could be a great way to reach out to someone.

Explaining more, Sanaz Ahari, who works as Senior Director of Product Management at Gmail, said: “Soon you’ll be able to call members of a team directly from a one-to-one chat. This will ring their device running the Gmail mobile app and send a call chip to a chat on their laptop, so they can easily answer from any device.”

This update is all part of big changes to Google’s Workspace service with the US tech firm saying it’s trying to create a single connected experience via something called Spaces.

“Spaces are the central place for team collaboration in Workspace,” added Ahari. “We hear from our customers that they’re continuing to work across a broad range of locations and working hours, and that Spaces can be a central hub for collaboration, both in real time and asynchronously. Instead of starting an email chain or scheduling a video meeting, teams can come together directly in a Space to move projects and topics along, whether it’s a team of 10 for ‘2022 Roadmap Planning’ or a team of 1,000 for the ‘Company-wide All-Hands’.”

Along with the update to Gmail, there are plenty of other extras coming to Workspace including a flexible user interface that helps users easily access their inbox, chats, Spaces and meetings all from a single location.

There’s also an enhanced search option that makes it easy to find content from within Spaces and Google has added the ability to reply to any message within a Space which the firm hopes will “fuel deeper discussions and collaboration across teams and organisations.”

Finally, the US firm has made its security and admin features more robust with added tools for content moderation and managing the Spaces. This update will be rolling out in the coming months so watch this, erm, space.
