Your BT broadband bill is about to rocket but there's an easy way to beat the price hike

Like all of the major broadband providers, BT is about to increase prices with things going up from next month. The hike is going to add 7.9 percent to most monthly bills which means those currently paying £40 will soon see an extra £3.16 being removed from their bank account. Pay £60 now and you’ll face a price of £64.74 from April 1. It’s clearly bad news for bills but there is a simple way to beat this price hike.

Plusnet, which is actually owned by BT, is currently offering deals that promise to keep prices exactly the same until March 2025.

“Full Fibre broadband deals with no price increase until 2025 Get our fastest most reliable speeds from £27.99 a month and pay the same price for another year,” Plusnet announced on its website.

This basically means if you cancel your BT contract and move to Plusnet, you’ll pay the same price now and for the next 12 months.

Because both platforms use BT’s Openreach network, switching should be very straightforward – the usual £20 sign-up fee has also been scrapped so it’s completely free to join.

Plusnet’s current price plans are also pretty competitive with things starting from £27.99 for standard 72Mbps speeds – that’s £3 per month cheaper than a similar plan from BT.

Another way to beat the price hikes is to check your area for so-called “alt-networks”. These smaller providers are popping up all over the UK with many offering very fast speeds at a much lower cost. For example, Community Fibre, which supplies broadband in London is currently dishing out ludicrously quick 1Gbps speeds for just £26 per month. That’s around £24 cheaper than that similar offer from Plusnet. So Shop around and you might find a serious saving to be made.

WHAT SPEEDS DO YOU NEED?

The better the download speed the more you will pay so make sure you only upgrade to the power you really need.

A single person who simply wants to send a few emails and stream the odd show on Netflix shouldn’t need anything more than a 30Mbps connection.

However, a house full of gadgets with people trying to stream in 4K, download games and make Zoom calls will need much faster speeds. A busy family that doesn’t want a sluggish connection should look at upgrading to at least 200Mbps or faster.

Remember that your broadband is like a motorway, the more traffic running along it, the slower it will get. That’s why it’s wise for digital-packed home to have faster speeds to start with.
