You could get to use a 5G phone as soon as Feb

New Delhi: India is set to get its first 5G phone as early as February. And it’s yet another Chinese company, iQOO, that’s entering the world’s fastest-growing smartphone market with a 5G smartphone in the premium segment, aiming to sell one million units in 2020 through the online channel initially.

The company will launch 5G and 4G variants of its latest premium smartphone featuring high-end specifications, Gagan Arora, director of marketing at iQOO, told ET. He didn’t reveal the prices of the new phones.

According to Tarun Pathak, associate director at Counterpoint Technology Market Research, iQOO’s 5G device will help it overcome entry barriers. “A lot of Chinese brands are using 5G to enter new markets globally and iQOO is doing the same by bringing a major technology disruption instead of just specifications and features like processor, camera and display,” he said.

Handset companies plan to start selling 5G phones in India in the first half of 2020, with some devices likely to be available in the first quarter, even as the government prepares to auction 5G spectrum in India in the April-June quarter.

A part of BBK Electronics, iQOO started as a sub-brand of Vivo in 2019 and now operates independently in China, a strategy it will follow in India.

“iQOO was launched in China last year and we sold 200,000 devices in four hours. We then realised that it can become a global brand. As a part of global expansion, we are entering India,” Arora said. “We will be running the brand independently in India and now setting up our operations, supply chain and our new office in Bengaluru.”
