A woman was struck and killed as she attempted to cross Highway 74 in Menifee, where pedestrian crossings are prohibited, authorities said Wednesday, Jan. 12.
The fatality happened about 9:20 p.m. Tuesday at Highway 74 and Trumble Road, according to the Menifee Police Department.
Capt. Chris Karrer said the victim, whose identity was not immediately released, was on the south side of the highway when she stepped into lanes to go to the north curb.
“This side of the intersection is posted `No Pedestrian Crossing’ and has no marked crosswalk,” Karrer said.
He said the driver of a sedan approached the intersection at an unknown speed and suddenly spotted the woman in his path, at which point he “attempted to swerve, but he was unable to avoid striking the pedestrian.”
The motorist immediately stopped and called 911. He was not injured.
According to Karrer, California Highway Patrol officers arrived just prior to Menifee patrol units and found the victim dead at the scene.
“There is no suspected impairment or distracted driving involved,” the captain said.
The driver was questioned and released.
