The UEFA Euro 2020 will finally go ahead from June 11, after the coronavirus outbreak put a pin in many sporting events last year.

Last year would have also marked the 60th anniversary of the tournament, with the plans to commemorate the occasion being moved forward to this year as well.

To mark the occasion, games are being hosted in 11 different cities, a first for any Euros competition.

The tournament will kick off with a match between Turkey and Italy, preceded by an opening ceremony at 7pm, before the first whistle is blown at 8pm.

England will play their first game against Croatia on Sunday, June 13 at 2pm, and will be hoping to go one step further than the last World Cup, where they made it to the semi-finals.

It is a summer of football that many fans will be hungry for, with the taste of all the action likely to make many wonder when they can expect the next World
Cup, the biggest international football tournament of them all.

When was the last World Cup?

The last World Cup was held from June 11 to July 14 in the summer of 2018, and took place in Russia.

England were knocked out by Croatia in the semi-final, and lost the third-place playoff to Belgium.

Croatia went on to face France in the final, with France going on to win the tournament by winning 4-2.

The reigning world champions have been deemed the favourites to win the Euros this year as well by the likes of commentator and ex-Man United footballer Gary Neville.

There are four years in between each World Cup tournament, meaning that the next one will take place in 2022.

The Euros also follows a four-year pattern, but the delay has meant it has been five years since the last Euros in 2016, which was won by Portugal.

The 2022 FIFA World Cup is due to take place in Qatar, and instead of the usual summer dates, it will take place in the winter due to Qatar’s intense summer heat.

The action will take place between 21 November – 18 December.

Qualification for the tournament is still ongoing, with many games across the world being delayed due to the ongoing pandemic.

England are currently top of their group with a full nine points from the three games that have been played.

Only Qatar has qualified so far, as the host country is always granted automatic qualification in the World Cup.

The next World Cup qualifying games are scheduled to be played in September, with the qualifying teams set to be decided ahead of the main group draw scheduled for April 2022.
