Visaka receives global IEC certification for ATUM PV modules

HYDERABAD: Visaka Industries has announced that it received the prestigious certification from the global safety science company UL for its solar photovoltaic (PV) modules, being marketed under ATUM brand.

ATUM, which the company claims as the world’s first integrated solar roof, has passed the stringent solar PV module tests prescribed under the latest International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) and UL Standards, said the company in a statement.

Visaka Industries views that the compliance to the IEC standards revised in March 2016 would now enable ATUM to position itself in the markets of Europe, Latin America, and Africa among 50 other countries.

The integrated solar roofing system while serving all the functions of a traditional roof also generate electricity, wherein the integrated solar panels are manufactured with a cementitious substrate base that provides better thermal conductivity compared to a traditional roof. The integrated solar roofing system also adds an aesthetic element to the roof.

The IEC standards were revised taking into account the changing technological requirements in the solar industry to suit climate change and sustainability. The new norms involve changes in the test procedure, sequence, duration and methodology for evaluating structural safety and performance of solar modules manufactured with crystalline silicon and other thin-film technologies. In terms of the new standards, the solar PV modules are required to increase cycle time from 15 days to 120 days to account for the rising UV radiation in the atmosphere.

A set of the IEC standards were also completely revised to include new testing sequences and Module Safety Tests (MSTs) requiring the product design to accommodate minimum electrical requirements to sustain a higher voltage.

Visaka Industries’ joint managing director Vamsi Krishna G said the company preferred partnering with a reputed, accredited and trusted testing partner to ensure that its products adhere to the IEC standards and is endorsed by
UL. Viewing that the new global certification opens up market avenues for the company in over 50 countries, he said the company has showcased its self-sustainable and eco-friendly model homes at the UN-Habitat Assembly in Nairobi, Kenya. The United Nations entity mandates promotion of socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities aimed at providing adequate shelter for all.

Apart from the solar PV modules, the Hyderabad headquartered Visaka Industries is also into manufacture of manmade fibre yarn, corrugated cement sheets, and fibre cement boards.
