Use mall infrastructure for vaccination, says Shopping Centres Association of India

Shopping Centres Association of India (SCAI) has urged state governments to utilise mall infrastructure to carry out vaccination drive to curb the spread of Covid 19.

“This move will help accelerate the government’s efforts in carry out such an exercise that will eventually benefit the larger cause of ‘Break the chain.’ Malls are social infrastructure with ample safe and hygienic parking space, training rooms and can be utilized as vaccination camps,” SCAI said in a statement.

The industry gave example of Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) and Municipal Commissioner Abhijit Bangar for conducting their first ‘Drive Through’ vaccination drive at malls.

The ‘Drive Through’ vaccination drive was conducted in a joint effort with Seawoods Grand Central and Inorbit Mall in Navi Mumbai respectively for individuals above 45 years of age and was executed at the parking lot of the malls in a systematic and hygienic environment.

On Day 1, NMMC successfully conducted the vaccination for 80 individuals at Seawoods and over 60 individuals at Inorbit Mall and will continue with its efforts in the city.

SCAI also highlighted that as an industry, it will be more than forthcoming and happy to be part of the solution and provide space in over 100+ member malls which will add on to the current vaccination camps across the country.

SCAI also urged other state government to consider NMMC’s initiative as an example and urged them to come forward and join hands with malls to accelerate the vaccination process.
