IDPs used to be issued through the Post Office, but after April 1 motorists should pick them up from PayPoint stores instead.

Swansway Motor Group said: “It’s crucial for drivers to be aware of these changes.

“Plan accordingly to ensure you remain compliant with international driving laws.

“Not every country requires an International Driving Permit, but over 140 countries do.

“In key destinations like Turkey, Mexico, Canada, and Australia, being prepared with the correct type of IDP is crucial for lawful and hassle-free driving.

“Drivers need to be proactive in identifying whether their destination requires an IDP and, if so, which type.”

Any driver who wants a IDP must now visit a PayPoint store with their licence, their passport and a passport photo.

Swansway added: “The move to PayPoint outlets for IDP distribution is a significant change.

“It is also a reminder of the importance of staying informed about driving regulations, both domestically and internationally.

“As drivers adapt to this new system, they should remain vigilant about the requirements.

“Ensure you are fully compliant before travelling.”

What is an IDP?

IF you’re planning on driving abroad, you might need an International Driving Permit (IDP) as well as your driving licence.

However, there are three different IDPs – and you could need all three if driving to different countries.

An IDP is essentially an official document that translates your existing driving licence into several languages and allows you to drive in over 140 countries.

The 1926, the 1949 and the 1968 IDPs are valid for different countries across the world.

The driving permits can be bought for £5.50 with a valid UK driving licence and a passport photograph.

They are available immediately but some stores could face shortages depending on demand.
