Universal Credit changes: What is the Way to Work scheme? New sanctions explained

Poverty levels reached new highs under Mr Cameron’s control.

Sanctions were temporarily suspended under the first lockdown, but in recent months sanctions levels have crept up again.

The move has been slammed by the Labour Party and experts.

Ruth Patrick, a senior lecturer in social policy at the University of York, said: “Pushing people to apply for any job regardless of its suitability, underpinned by the very real threat of benefit sanctions, is corrosive to relationships between claimants and advisers, and risks pushing people into insecure and unsuitable employment.

“This is not a way to work, it is a way to policy failure.
