Turkey vs Wales LIVE: Euro 2020 team news, lineups and latest build-up today

Euro 2020: Daily briefing

Follow live coverage as Turkey take on Wales in Euro 2020 Group A in Baku today.

Turkey stumbled out of the blocks in the tournament opener against Italy on Friday night with the Azzurri dominating proceedings and eventually easing away to a comfortable win. Much-fancied as a dark horse to do some damage in the competition, Turkey know they will have to be much better this afternoon if they are to deliver on their promise.

Wales also failed to win their first game but Kieffer Moore’s late header salvaged a point against Switzerland after a match where they rarely looked like getting one. Their hopes will again be led by captain Gareth Bale who will look to make his mark on the tournament after a quiet start with midfielder Aaron Ramsey also sure to be key.

Ten minutes to kick-off people. This is undoubtedly Wales’ biggest game since Euro 2016. The result today will almost certainly determine whether or not they reach the second round.

Former Wales midfielder Robbie Savage is a little sceptical about Rob Page’s decision to field the same starting XI he put out against Switzerland.

The players have had just four days rest since their first group game on Saturday.

‘How will the two sides line-up?,’ I hear you cry. Well, here you go. We expect a 4-2-3-1 for Wales with Ramsey, James and Bale playing off Moore up front. Rob Page will also be hoping they can use Morrell and Allen a little more than they did on Saturday.

Gareth Bale has given his thoughts ahead of the match tonight.

He said: “Momentum is a big word. The most important thing is we didn’t lose the game against Switzerland. We’d have liked to have won but I thought we showed a lot of character to get back into the game.”

And on the crowd being partisan towards Turkey, he added: “We’re used to being in front of hostile crowds. If anything it spurs us on to be a bit more ruthless on the pitch.”

A reminder that Turkey were totally outplayed by Italy on the opening night of the tournament on Friday. They will be transfixed on bouncing back strongly from that dismal display.

Stars Hakan Calhanoglu and Burak Yilmaz were kept quiet throughout that match. But they were in superb form for Milan and Lille last season, so Wales will undoubtedly have their hands full.

Finland frustrated but late bloomer Joel Pohjanpalo continues to impress – Euro 2020 scouting report

Against Denmark, the sense was almost of apologetic celebration, a sense that too much congratulation over scoring was inappropriate and unfair after what had happened to Christian Eriksen earlier in the day.

Against Russia, the celebration was far more all-in, totally unrestrained and joyous – before being cut short and rendered irrelevant by a VAR offside call.

Unfortunate twists, but football rarely follows the predictable, best-possibility path – if it did, Joel Pohjanpalo might be playing in the Premier League. The Finland forward had a trial with Liverpool in his younger years, though no move was ultimately agreed and he moved to Bayer Leverkusen instead the following campaign, on loan, then later permanently.
