Tuchel details Abramovich promise after Chelsea duo meet for first time in Porto

Thomas Tuchel got Roman Abramovich’s seal of approval as Chelsea won the Champions League – and is set to be rewarded with a new contract.

Tuchel met the Blues’ owner for the first time on the Estadio do Drago pitch, just moments after the Londoners were confirmed European champions for the second time in nine years thanks to Kai Havertz’s first-half goal.

And he said: “I think I have a new contract already.

“My manager said something to me about it – but I don’t know for sure.

“It was a special moment to meet the owner for the first time on the pitch.

“It was the best time for that – or maybe the worst because it can only get worse after this.

“But we will speak tomorrow. I want him to know that I am still hungry for more and that I already want the next title.

“We have a very strong group of players here and I want to close the gap.”

Tuchel added: “I want to dedicate this victory to my parents, my wife and my kids, who were in the stadium.”

Chelsea deserved their victory.

And while Tuchel admitted he was surprised by Pep Guardiola’s team selection, the Manchester City boss insisted he had no regrets.

Guardiola said: “I picked the best team that I thought would win the game – and the players know it.

“I still think it has been an exceptional season for us, but this is our first Champions League final and we will learn from this experience.

“I did my best with the selection. I think we played a good game and that we played with courage, especially in the second half when we deserved a goal.”

Chelsea star Mason Mount, who impressed in the final, claimed Chelsea could now call themselves the best team in the world.

Mount told BT Sport: “I’ve dreamt as a kid of going all the way, making a final and winning it. That’s what this cup’s all about.

“I’ve been there as a kid, now to go all the way in the Champions League, through some tough games – we’ve played some top teams – and now we’re in a final and we’ve won, it’s such a special occasion.

“At this moment in time, we’re the best team in the world and you can’t take that away from us.”
