When Chelsea arrive at the Etihad this weekend, the world of football will be watching.
With the Blues set to face Manchester City in the Champions League final in May, fans will be looking for clues as to which side will be crowned European champions. A win for one side or the other could be a huge psychological advantage.
Off the pitch, things are similarly feverish. Both clubs are accustomed to lavish spending in the transfer market and there’s little sign that this summer will be any different.
Thomas Tuchel, in particular, will be looking to make his mark on a squad largely assembled under Antonio Conte, Maurizio Sarri and Frank Lampard.
While he is tasked with getting the best out of last summer’s statement signings, Timo Werner and Kai Havertz, he will likely have a longlist of new arrivals in mind.
Here’s Saturday’s Chelsea transfer round-up with all the latest developments.
Two Blues could leave for Serie A
While there could be quite a few departures this summer, two Chelsea players look likely to move to Italy.
“It is very likely that Emerson Palmieri or Marcos Alonso of Chelsea will arrive in Italy,” Alessandro Belluzzo said in an interview with Tuttomercatoweb.
“But it is very likely that other important players on a free transfer will be able to come to Italy, or others even on loan.”
Palmieri has long been linked with a move away from Stamford Bridge, having failed to establish himself in the starting line-up. Alonso has a much bigger footprint at the club, with 164 appearances to his name and a respectable collection of winners’ medals since joining from Fiorentina in 2016.
Juventus willing to sell Alex Sandro
Chelsea may have to compete with PSG and Manchester United for Brazilian left-back Alex Sandro, but he’s on the market.
The Bianconeri could be convinced to part with him for closer to €20m (£17.4m), however.
While Sandro is keen on Chelsea, PSG and United are also considering making an offer for him.
Sandro joined Juve from Porto in 2015 and has gone on to make 228 appearances, winning five Scudetti.
Chelsea to battle City for Lewandowski?
While all eyes are on the Champions League final, Chelsea and City might end up battling it out behind the scenes this summer.
According to ESPN, both clubs are interested in signing Bayern Munich talisman Robert Lewandowski.
The Polish striker is undecided on his future, with Bayern looking for opening bids at around the €60m (£52.1m) mark.
Lewandowski, aged 32, remains one of the most consistent goalscorers in European football, having netted 43 times in only 37 appearances this term.
Where Pep Guardiola is looking to replace the departing Sergio Aguero, Tuchel reportedly wants to add to his options in attack after a difficult season for Werner.
