Dejan Lovren leaves Liverpool

Liverpool have confirmed Dejan Lovren’s exit, with the defender joining Zenit St. Petersburg.

“Another Liverpool legend who leaves the club, because he was absolutely a very, very important part of this team from the first day since I was in,” Jurgen Klopp said.

“I remember when we played with Dortmund against Liverpool in the pre-season friendly and Dejan scored with a header with incredible power. That was the image I had in my mind when I came here and I thought about the defenders we had at the time.

“He played super games and scored one of the most important goals of our history in the 4-3 against Borussia Dortmund; a really wonderful moment to share.

“He had so many good games. Yes, I think he will not like the Tottenham game when I took him off in the first half, but it is part of football and part of development – and he always came back.

“When he was fit, he was very, very, very often in the team. A great player and a great person.”

Tottenham exit confirmed

Tottenham star Jan Vertonghen has confirmed he will leave the club this summer.

The Belgium international spent eight years in north London, making 232 Premier League appearances.

Newcastle takeover update

Newcastle owner Mike Ashley told the club’s first-team squad that the proposed £300million Saudi takeover is still in the hands of the Premier League and that nothing has yet changed.

Steve Bruce revealed the message from Ashley to his players before their defeat to Liverpool on Sunday.

“He wanted to say thank you to all my players and staff for the hard work and effort and to enjoy the summer,” Bruce said when asked what Ashley’s Zoom call to the squad from the United States entailed.

“What he reiterated was it’s in the hands of the Premier League and it’s been like that for weeks.

“We need a decision and one quickly. How long do we need to make that decision?

“All I want is what’s best for this great club. If new owners come in and take the club forward that’s what we all want as Newcastle fans.”

Man Utd must pay additional Bruno Fernandes fee

Manchester United must pay Sporting Lisbon an additional £4.5million because of a bonus clause in the deal they agreed to sign Bruno Fernandes in January after qualifying for the Champions League.

United are unbeaten in the league since back-to-back defeats to Liverpool and Burnley in January.

With Fernandes in the team, they have won nine of 14 league games, scoring 30 goals.

With United’s Champions League qualification secured, Fernandes has already repaid the fee the 13-time Premier League winners paid to sign him.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side agreed an initial £47m fee that could rise to just shy of £68m.

And as part of the clauses that could take the eventual payment up to £68m, United now owe Sporting £4.5m after qualifying for next season’s Champions League, it’s understood.

Mikel Arteta transfer hint

Mikel Arteta says Arsenal could look to sign defenders this summer.

The Spaniard confirmed centre-back Shkodran Mustafi will miss the start of next season, while Calum Chambers and Pablo Mari are also injured.

“It looks a really nasty injury again,” he said.

“We have lost Calum Chambers the week after I arrived here, we lost Pablo as well for three months.

“Now we’ve lost Musti, so at the back we’re really touched and short. Musti has been playing really consistently and at a really good level with me.

“He pulled the tendon off the bone in his hamstring and that’s normally a lot of weeks. I already mentioned three central defenders that are not available and we haven’t had them available for a long time during the season. And we will have to address that.”
