Tottenham facing Sergio Reguilon exit with Real Madrid keen on buy-back clause

Tottenham could face the prospect of losing summer signing Sergio Reguilon in the near future, according to reports. The 24-year-old arrived in north London from Real Madrid over the summer, with the Spanish giants accepting a fee of around £25million for the defender.

Reguilon has played 13 times in the Premier League so far this season, establishing himself as an important member of Jose Mourinho‘s squad as Spurs chase their first domestic title in sixty years.

However, the Portuguese boss could potentially be robbed of his man before the end of the month, with Real eyeing a shock move to bring him back to the Spanish capital.

The 13-time European champions are considering a £40m bid to activate the buy-back clause inserted into Reguilon’s current contract, according to Sport.

The report claims that Real’s hierarchy are seeking a solution to their problems at left-back.

Marcelo has been involved in a number of high-profile slip-ups for Los Blancos this season, while Ferland Mendy has failed to impress when called upon by boss Zinedine Zidane.

Although Real are interested in sealing Reguilon’s return, it remains to be seen whether the defender would be prepared to agree terms.

It has been suggested that there may be a personal issue with Zidane, with the report claiming Reguilon could quite possibly be ‘fed up’ over the World Cup-winning midfielder’s decision to sell him in the first place.

Reguilon is a product of Real’s youth academy, having joined the club’s development programme in 2005 at eight years of age.

He made his first-team debut in October 2018 during a Champions League defeat to CSKA Moscow, and went on to make another 21 competitive appearances before joining Tottenham.

DON’T MISS

Although Mourinho is fond of the player, he spoke of his disappointment earlier this month after the defender broke Covid-19 restrictions in December.

The Spurs boss had presented Reguilon with a gift on Christmas Day, providing him with a Portuguese piglet to eat for dinner under the impression that he would be spending the rest of the evening alone.

It was then revealed that the player, along with a number of his Spurs team-mates and West Ham United midfielder Manuel Lanzini, had ignored the strict rules to socialise with friends and family at a party.

“[It was] an amazing gift,” Mourinho told reporters. “Portuguese piglet – which is amazing for Portuguese and Spanish.

“I gave him [one] because I was told he was going to spend Christmas on his own. He was not alone as you can see.”

Spurs have slipped away from the Premier League title race in recent weeks after experiencing a slight dip in form last month following the defeat against Liverpool.

Mourinho’s men currently occupy fifth place in the standings, seven points adrift of leaders Manchester United, with the north London club having played a game less.

Spurs will return to FA Cup action on Monday evening, with Championship strugglers Wycombe Wanderers their opponents at Adams Park.
