Tottenham could complete £47m Cristian Romero transfer today as star 'to fly into London'

Tottenham Hotspur could complete a £47million move for Atalanta defender Cristian Romero today, with the star reportedly set to fly into London. The 23-year-old has become one of Europe’s highest-rated young centre-backs under Gian Piero Gasperini at the Gewiss Stadium.

He has only spent one year at La Dea, but become a regular in the heart of defence, making 31 appearances as they secured a third-place finish.

While Romero was part of a defence that conceded the most goals of any team who finished in the top four of Serie A, he was named the league’s best defender.

The Argentine continued his impressive performances on the international stage, with only a knee injury limiting his playing time at this summer’s Copa America.

Having sat out all but two of his side’s group stage matches, Romero recovered in time to start the final.

He started alongside Nicolas Otamendi for Lionel Scaloni’s side, helping them to defeat Brazil 1-0 to win his first major trophy.

That replacement appears to be Romero, with Spurs reportedly closing in on signing the Argentina international.

According to multiple reports, his transfer to Tottenham is now well underway, with a deal close to being announced.

Transfer insider Fabrizio Romano has claimed that Romero has completed the first portion of his medical in Italy.

He will now fly to London to complete the final half, before signing a five-year contract with Nuno Espirito Santo’s side.

That report has been backed up by Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio, who expects the deal to be announced soon.

He claims that Romero began his medical yesterday and is expected to be in London at some point later today.

It will bring an immediate boost to a Tottenham team which is still yet to truly strengthen in the outfield areas.

If a deal is completed today, Romero could be in line to make his debut in Tottenham’s final friendly of pre-season against Arsenal on Sunday.
