Tottenham announce fan move following "unreserved" European Super League apology

Tottenham have become the latest club to announce fan representation at board level after issuing an “unreserved” apology for the European Super League fiasco.

Spurs followed Chelsea in giving supporters a say on key decisions by appointing as a non-executive director on an annual basis after the collapse of the ESL.

Chelsea will allow three supporter representatives to attend board meetings after fan groups and, while Tottenham did not quite go that far, it must be seen as a step in the right direction.

But the club statement did say it was “disappointed” that the Tottenham Hotspur Supporters’ Trust had not accepted meeting invitations.

It also claimed that they thought the ESL was a “framework” rather than a finished product and said legalities meant they could not do any consultation.

Tottenham said: “We wholeheartedly regret that we involved the Club and that the legal process itself meant we were unable to consult our fans early on – we apologise unreservedly.

“We have all learnt lessons from recent events and have reviewed fan engagement as a priority.

“As a result we shall be liaising with key stakeholders and establishing a Club Advisory Panel, comprised of elected representatives from the different constituencies of our fanbase, inclusive and reflective of our fans’ diversity.

“The Chair of this Panel will be appointed annually as a full Non-Executive of the Club Board.

“We believe this provides for authentic, genuine representation and will ensure fans are at the heart of Club decision-making, something we greatly welcome.”

The THST is a highly-respected fans’ group and it is a bold move by the club to call them out so publicly and they said they were “constructing a response to the unexpected Club statement.”
