A WOMAN who accused a senior Conservative MP of rape has claimed police did not take the investigation seriously and is calling for the case to be reopened.
The ex parliamentary researcher alleges she was assaulted four times between July 2019 and January 2020, including a rape that required hospital treatment.
One of the alleged assaults was said to have taken place in the former minister’s parliamentary office in Westminster.
The case was dropped in December, but now she claims that cops did not investigate properly and failed to follow up a number of lines of inquiry.
A source told the Sunday Mirror the woman had been through “utter hell” and had been subjected to verbal, mental and physical abuse.
Now the former aide is being advised by a top QC as she fights to get the case reopened.
Nigel Edwards QC has taken on her case and is advising her on further legal action.
The decision not to proceed with the investigation could be overturned under the Victim’s Right to Review scheme.
If successful, it would force detectives to continue the investigation.
The MP could then face trial if CPS decided to prosecute. The maximum sentence for rape is life in prison.
The alleged victim claims police ignored phone records and text messages, reports the Mirror.
And she says detectives failed to interview 14 people who have supporting evidence.
The woman’s mother says she found her “in shock and sobbing” after one alleged attack.
But she claims police dismissed her evidence as hearsay and suggested her daughter might want to drop the case.
The former minister, in his 50s, was arrested in August last year and interviewed at a police station in east London.
The MP has always denied all of the accusations.
He was not suspended from the Conservative Party, with chief whip Mark Spencer saying it was a matter for the police to investigate.
In October he had his bail lifted and was free to return to Westminster.
The woman previously said she was “devastated” he hadn’t been suspended from the party.
She told The Times: “It’s insulting and shows they never cared.”
