Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Dominic Thiem are the three favourites to win the upcoming French Open, according to Toni Nadal.

Spanish great Nadal will attempt to defend his title and win a 12th French Open at Roland Garros, which starts at the end of the month.

But Nadal does not appear quite as invincible as he once did on clay and he suffered a semi-final defeat to Stefanos Tsitsipas at the Madrid Open last week.

Djokovic won that event and Uncle Toni sees the Serb as one the favourites to win the French, along with his nephew Rafael and the consistent Thiem.

Asked whether Nadal would win a 12th French Open title, Toni told Tennis World USA: ‘I do not know, Rafael has not played in a perfect way in Madrid, Monte Carlo or Barcelona.

‘I think he is the favourite with Novak Djokovic and Dominic Thiem. Roger Federer, too, has won a record 20 Grand Slam titles so it is normal that he is one of the contenders.

‘Less [so] than Djokovic and Rafael but if he plays well he can beat one of the top guys.’

Toni Nadal also discussed tennis’ next generation and said there are several talented youngsters ready to break through by winning Grand Slams.

Asked which young player would be the first to win a Major, he added: ‘Until some time ago I thought Alexander Zverev but he has not played well in the Slams.

‘But he beat Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic in the London ATP Finals, he won in Madrid last year and he has the chance to be the next one.

‘Anybody can win, there are many who play well: Tsitsipas, Shapovalov, Felix Auger-Aliassime… Kyrgios, if he is focused, especially at Wimbledon he can make it.’

On 22-year-old Spaniard Jaume Munar, Toni Nadal said: ‘He is good, but he needs to improve more. In the next few years, he will be there among the best guys.’
