This TikTok trend (also known as #ItsYourGirl) came from Keke Palmer’s hosting gig at the Met Gala this year. It comes from her interaction with rapper Megan Thee Stallion.

Meaning behind ‘token boyfriend’ explained

A token boyfriend is a guy who is the only male in his friendship group of females. So, when hanging out with the group, the guy will be their token boyfriend.

The term did not originate on TikTok. In fact, the idea has been around for quite some time, with it being referenced back in 2008.

Then, a token boyfriend was described as someone who gave you all the benefits of being in a relationship without the romantic and sexual intimacy. Token boyfriends have often been the subjects of films, particularly around the holidays.
