Tim Sherwood has urged Jesse Lingard, Daniel James and Anthony Martial to leave Manchester United following Cristiano Ronaldo’s return to Old Trafford.

Portugal legend Ronaldo has agreed a deal to re-sign for his former club United after deciding to leave Italian giants Juventus.

Ronaldo, 36, spent three years in Turin, scoring more than 100 goals and helping the club win two Serie A titles.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner will now hope to help Manchester United win more trophies, having lifted three Premier Leagues and the Champions League during his first spell at the Theatre of Dreams.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer may look to trim his first-team squad following the sensational return of Ronaldo and Sherwood believes Lingard, James and Martial should all be looking to leave.

Lingard has been strongly linked with a move to West Ham after impressing on loan in east London last season. Manchester United will consider offers for the England international but value him at around £25m.

Wales star James only made 15 Premier League appearances last season and Leeds United have expressed interest in securing his services this summer.

Martial, meanwhile, has spent six years at Old Trafford but remains a figure of frustration having failed to develop into the world-class player he was tipped to when he arrived in England in 2015.

‘I think a few players will need to go,’ Sherwood told Premier League productions after Ronaldo’s Manchester United return was confirmed.

‘They need to hand in a 25-man squad, there’s a few there who are not getting in the squad.

‘Jesse Lingard misses out, I think he needs to go and play for West Ham. He had a great time there last year, he looked like he wanted to go and play football and he was outstanding. I think it’s his time to leave the club.

‘I think Daniel James might leave as well. Leeds are chasing him and he played well against them in the first game of the season. It was a great rehearsal for him. He’s got outstanding pace and directness. I think he’ll be another one [who leaves].

‘For me, Anthony Martial will be moved on. If they’ve got a home for Martial and they can get the right money, I think they will shake hands and say it never worked out.’

Manchester United finished second in the Premier League last season while reaching the Europa League final. They have taken four points from their first two games of this season and face Wolves on Sunday.

While Ronaldo will link up with new teammates after the international break, fellow summer signings Raphael Varane and Jadon Sancho could feature for the Red Devils.
