The US-owned firm, which sells tickets for music gigs, plays and comedy events, saw the details stolen in a data breach in 2018.

It initially admitted 40,000 customers were affected, but an investigation by the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) has revealed the impact was much greater.

As the ICO levied its £1.25m fine yesterday, it said up to 9.4m Ticketmaster customers may have been affected, including 1.5m in the UK.

Ticketmaster said it intends to appeal the fine.
