Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel is considering using Saul Niguez as a makeshift left wing-back in the wake of Ben Chilwell’s ACL injury.

The Atletico Madrid loanee midfielder has endured a torrid temporary stint at Stamford Bridge so far, appearing just three times in the league and being hauled off at half-time on two occasions.

Having made the switch to west London in the very last stages of the summer transfer window, the move has drastically underwhelmed in terms of expectation.

However, his Chelsea career could potentially enjoy a revival as a result of Chilwell’s long-term injury, as the former Leicester man could require knee surgery which will likely spell the end of his season.

As a result, the Blues will have to depend on an ageing Marcos Alonso for much of the season as they look to secure their first Premier League title since 2017.

Tuchel has already admitted he could look to use Saul as a deputy left wing-back to take the burden off of Alonso during the hectic fixture list over the festive period.

When pressed on whether Saul could be transformed into a makeshift full-back, Tuchel explained: “Yeah, he’s still adapting.

“He had an early yellow card [against Watford ], he was a bit shy to play all-in in the duels.

“For that we lacked a bit of his physicality because he did not want to risk a red card which was a good thing on that evening because we did not want to be one man down.

“I think that he could play in the wing-back role for us.

“Even if we play a dominant game and an offensive game because he’s very strong in arriving in the opponent’s box, very strong in finishing and has good timing to arrive on the second post with his head.”

Tuchel’s comments come just days after his scathing assessment of Saul’s standard of performance following his 45-minute disastrous showing at Vicarage Road.

“I don’t know where he goes from this performance but he was on a yellow card so we had two options,” said Tuchel.

“We could have taken Marcos [Alonso] off who also had a yellow card and try Saul as a wing-back. I had this in my mind before the game, if something happened to Marcos.

“But I thought maybe it was not the right match to try things with new positions so it was [subbing] him to change the shape a little bit and have Thiago on the pitch with his organising.”
