Thomas Tuchel has praised the performances of young defenders Malang Sarr and Trevoh Chalobah following the win over Brentford.

Ben Chilwell’s first-half strike was the difference on Saturday evening but Chelsea were forced to cling on in the final third of the game as the Bees pushed hard for an equaliser.

Edouard Mendy was Chelsea’s man of the match, making a string of superb saves to keep the hosts at bay.

But Sarr and Chalobah, playing in a back three alongside Andreas Christensen, also played their part in keeping a clean sheet.

Sarr was a surprise inclusion in the starting XI, drafted in for his Premier League debut with Antonio Rudiger and Thiago Silva both unavailable.

Tuchel admitted that Chelsea might have found themselves under less pressure with some of their more experienced defenders in the side but was still impressed with the performances of the young duo, insisting they now have some vital Premier League experience under their belt.

He told Sky Sports: ‘In these moments it helps if we have Toni [Rudiger] and Thiago with their experience to stay calm, to win decisive challenges, to calm the game down, or with Thiago with his understanding of the first touch to escape the pressure and to maybe create counter attacks and score a second one.

‘But we don’t want to talk about guys who are not here.

‘We trust the guys who played, they are young and they needed it.

‘Otherwise if you don’t play you can’t get experience.

‘They did very, very good and in the last 25 minutes, we need to talk where we can do better and always there is room to improve.’

Victory moves Chelsea back to the top of the Premier League, a point ahead of Liverpool.
