Liverpool midfielder Thiago Alcantara told his team-mates that a draw against Manchester United was ‘not good enough’ during his side’s 0-0 statelmate with their arch rivals at Anfield.

Jurgen Klopp’s side slipped to fourth in the table after they were kept to a draw at Anfield by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side, who had the best chances to win on Merseyside.

Thiago was making his home debut for the club and was Liverpool’s most impressive performer on the day, as the Reds controlled possession but struggled to create many clear-cut chances.

It was United that were pushing for the winner in the latter stages, even though Solskjaer’s men arguably had more to protect given they were top of the table for the first time in over three years.

However, the magnitude of the game wasn’t lost on Thiago and the Liverpool Echo claim he was heard telling his team-mates that a draw was ‘not enough’ during the second half.

The draw certainly suited Manchester City, who moved to within two points of the top later on Sunday night with a 4-0 win against Crystal Palace.

Only time will tell whether Thiago’s warning to his team-mates was right but it’s clear that the champions are well below-par at this moment in time.

Liverpool host Burnley at Anfield on Thursday before taking on United again on Sunday in the fourth round of the FA Cup.
