Wakefield Trinity ended a 10-game losing run as they came from behind to stun Huddersfield Giants in Super League.

Matty Ashurst’s early try for Wakefield was cancelled out by Aidan Sezer before Jordan Turner put Huddersfield ahead.

Sam Wood scored his first try of the season to further extend the Giants’ lead but Tom Johnstone hit back.

Trinity ran in a late try, again thanks to Johnstone, as they completed their comeback to record a valuable victory.

Wakefield remain bottom of the Super League table on points difference after the victory, while Huddersfield remain seventh.

The match went ahead as planned despite appearing to be in the balance when Trinity recorded four further positive Covid-19 tests prior to Thursday.

Three players and a staff member tested positive, while two other personnel – including one player – must now self-isolate under track and trace protocol.

Wakefield have struggled since the season restarted and came into Thursday’s fixture with an unenviable run of form, but they led early on thanks to Ashurst’s try.

Trinity fought back within moments of Wood’s try and capitalised on Lee Gaskell’s wayward kicking to move within two points of the Giants just before the hour mark.

Chris Chester’s side initially looked to have snatched victory when Ben Jones-Bishop crossed but his try was ruled out when Kyle Wood was shown to be offside.

However, Wakefield kept up their late momentum and were rewarded with a first win since March when Johnstone touched down his second of the evening soon after.
