'Stay safe' Police urge Britons to beware fake scam Census texts threatening fine


Earlier this week, a tweet was posted by Action Fraud which read: “We are warning the public about scam text messages relating to the Census 2021.

“These scam texts threaten the recipient with a £1000 fine for not completing the Census, or filling it in incorrectly. #census2021.”

Meanwhile, HMRC has warned tax credits customers to be vigilant and alert to potential scams, as tax credits customers should expect any remaining annual renewal packs to arrive in the post this week.

Myrtle Lloyd, HMRC’s Director General for Customer Services, said: “We’re urging all of our customers to be really careful if they are contacted out of the blue by someone asking for money or bank details.
