Shaq Moore scores 20 seconds in, US beats Canada 1-0 in Gold Cup – Press Enterprise – California News Times

Kansas City, Kansas (AP) — Shakel Moore scored 20 seconds and the United States beat Canada 1-0 on Sunday to win Group B in the CONCACAF Gold Cup.

Moore’s goal was the fastest since the US record began in 1990. Clint Dempsey scored 30 seconds against Ghana in the opening round of the 2014 World Cup for Americans.

Both countries were already guaranteed to move forward. The United States set a 3-0 record in the first round group, playing Costa Rica or Jamaica on July 25 in Arlington, Texas, and a 2-0 match in Orlando, Florida on Tuesday. Canada will finish the first round 2-1 against Costa Rica or Jamaica.

The United States has won eight consecutive Canadian team records. The United States has been undefeated by Canada in 20 home matches since 1957, extending CONCACAF’s winning streak against its opponents to 13 times.

US coach Gregg Berhalter mainly uses the junior national team roster for the Gold Cup. Top players such as Christian Pulisic, Weston McKennie, Tyler Adams and Zack Steffen will be attending when the United States hosts Canada in the World Cup qualifiers in Nashville, Tennessee on September 5.

While Barholter started two forwards with Daryl Dike and Gyasi Zardes, Canada was dominant and had more chances to score. Still, in the Gold Cup group stage, the United States improved to 38 wins, 1 loss and 4 draws.

The United States scored when Kellyn Acosta made a wide pass to Sebastian Lletget. Moore, 24, rode behind Tajong Bucannon and redirected the ball from just inside the 6-yard box for his first international goal.
