“For the next two months, we will address the limited capacity by scaling up the vaccine production,” said Adar Poonawala in a statement.
“Going ahead, 50% of our capacities will be served to the Government of India’s vaccination program, and the remaining 50% of the capacity will be for the State governments and private hospitals,” Poonawalla added.
The central government opened up vaccination for all adults in India above the age of 18 from May 1. It has asked state governments to procure the vaccines and also allowed private companies to sell it in open market.
Serum said its vaccines are the cheapest compared to all the other vaccines. The “American vaccines” (by Pfizer & Moderna) which are estimated to be Rs 1500 per dose, Sputnik V that is priced at Rs 750 per dose. The company is also expected to expand the capacity from current 70 mn doses to 100 mn doses in next two months.
