Manchester United icon Paul Scholes has doubled-down on his claim that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer needs to sign a new centre-forward in order to win the Premier League, having previously expressed doubts over Anthony Martial.
Scholes claimed in the past that Anthony Martial had “conned” Solskjaer and United fans alike into thinking he was good enough to lead the line.
The Red Devils are eager to bring in a new striker this summer, with Erling Haaland their top target.
And Scholes believes the time has come for them to sign a new centre-forward, though he explained on BT Sport that they could just look to extend Edinson Cavani’s contract for another year in order to give themselves more time.
A move for Haaland would likely cost upwards of £130million before agents fees or the player’s salary have been accounted for.
And Scholes explained that while signing Haaland might not make them contenders for the Champions League just yet, a new centre-forward would definitely improve their chances of winning the Premier League.
“I think [they need a new striker],” he told BT Sport on Thursday night. “Champions League, perhaps, but it’s more the Premier League they’re looking for at this moment in time.
“They haven’t really challenged for it for a few years now. Okay, they’re second this season but they still look a little way off Manchester City.

“What do they have to do next season? I think a centre-forward is the priority. I think they have got very good forwards but is one of them a centre forward?
“If you take Cavani out of it, is one of them a real centre forward? Is Marcus Rashford, Mason Greenwood, Anthony Martial a real centre forward? They look better to me in wide areas.
“Cavani we know, with his great experience, but again I think Manchester United have had around 50 games this year and he’s only started 15 games. That’s not a lot to rely on a centre-forward.
“He’s a brilliant centre-forward, his goalscoring record is amazing.
“Can they keep him for another year and maybe delay [the decision to sign a striker] for another year? Maybe.
“But eventually they’re going to have to try and sign a top-class centre-forward. There’s a couple out there that may be available.
“I don’t know what the situation is. it’s going to cost a lot of money, we know that.”
Scholes comments come after he previously hit out at Martial, believing that the Frenchman isn’t an out-and-out striker.
“These forwards are exceptionally talented lads. We all know that,” Scholes told Stadium Astro earlier this season.
“The problem with United’s forwards is that none of them is an actual centre-forward.
‘”Martial almost conned us into thinking he was one at the end of last season because he scored so many goals and was quite good. ‘He’s started this season quite poorly again, which makes you think he isn’t. It’s misleading.
“That’s why I’ve kept saying we need a top-class No. 9.”
