Home entertainment has become more important than ever, especially during lockdowns across multiple states in the country.
The latest innovations from Samsung are on show in the Neo QLED TV that brings entertainment to the forefront in your living room.
I’ve had the 75-inch model for the past three weeks to test out and from what I can tell you, it does not disappoint in bringing the big screen to life.
How do I get it and what will it cost?
Samsung’s NEO QLED range isn’t cheap but if you’re looking for a quality TV for the very best viewing experience you can get, this is a great option.
There are a couple of size options as well including 65-inch, 75-inch or 85-inch display models as well as 8K and 4K versions.
We’ve had the 75-inch Neo QLED 8K Smart TV (QN900A model) to test which comes in at $8,995. The 65-inch can be snapped up for $6,495 and the large 85-inch model is $11,995.
You can purchase from most major retailers in Australia including Harvey Norman.
Who is it good for?
It seems that over the past two years viewing experiences and habits have accelerated in how we consume our favourite movies, TV shows, gaming and big sporting events such as the Tokyo Olympics. This has been helped along by statewide lockdowns and stay-at-home orders.
Samsung’s Neo QLED range demands attention, and that’s a good thing when a TV is one of the most used devices in a home to consume content. And with the cricket season approaching, as well as the Beijing Winter Olympics early next year, there has never been a better TV in the market to watch the events in such incredible clarify.
But it’s not just sporting events. From Netflix to BINGE and Amazon Video, everything looks absolutely stunning on the screen with deep blacks and vibrant colours. And with the release of the PlayStation 5, gaming also looks better than ever.
While we’re all waiting for the next major global sporting event, the Beijing Olympic Winter Games early next year, there has still been plenty to entertain on streaming platforms – and the Neo QLED offers seriously stunning picture quality.
How does it work?
The first thing you’ll notice about the Neo QLED TV is the thin profile. Samsung has managed to shrink the thickness right down so that it can sit flush against a wall.
What’s more impressive is that Samsung has also been able to include some decent speakers on the back including eight woofers and some tweeters up the side and top. The sound is then pushed off things like your walls to create an immersive surround sound experience.
When it comes to picture quality, the Neo QLED TV is bright with nice colour saturation. There is a lot of technical smarts going on inside the set to achieve these results. Being a TV that supports 8K content, there are four times more pixels on the screen – even when watching content that is lower in resolution.
In those moments the TV will automatically adjust the picture quality by doing some sharpening voodoo so it looks as good as possible. An example of this was when the kids were watching the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie… from 1990. For an older movie, the quality was indeed very good.
The explanation of how the Neo QLED can achieve such good results on older content is very technical. But it’s basically using some refinements to an AI algorithm that analyses the content as you’re watching it to make it look the best it possibly can.
Another useful feature of this TV series is the One Connect box. As Samsung put it, “the Samsung One Connect Box is a media receiver with a built-in TV tuner that minimises cable clutter by functioning as a hub for connecting all of your compatible devices – like gaming consoles or Blu-Ray players.”
A single cable plugs into the back of the TV making it easy to connect anything you need without requiring access to the back – especially handy if you’ve done a wall-mounted job. This cable also delivers power to the Neo QLED.
Finally, as part of Samsung’s sustainability efforts, the remote doesn’t need you to replace the batteries every few months. This is because it’s solar-powered by a panel on the back of the remote. It’s also made from eco-friendly recycled materials.
The remote is well designed and the layout is well thought out. It also allows for voice assistant use through the integrated microphone. I found it simple to navigate around the TV’s menus and adjust things like the volume.
What we think
With a thin profile and crystal-clear screen, the Neo QLED is one of the most immersive and exciting home entertainment experiences I’ve ever had the pleasure of having.
As long as you have a good internet connection for the streaming services, the picture quality is nothing short of incredible and ensures that you see every goal, every swing, every catch and every moment.
Yes, price is something that you need to consider but if you enjoy lots of TV viewing then it’s totally worth the investment.
