Sadiq Khan accuses Boris Johnson of lying to Commons over 'bankrupt mayor' smear

Sadiq Khan today accused Boris Johnson of lying to Parliament after the Prime Minister smeared him as the “bankrupt mayor of London”.

The Tory leader had claimed Mr Khan “effectively bankrupted Transport for London before coronavirus had even hit”.

But in TfL’s 2019/20 accounts, Mr Khan said TfL had reduced its “like-for-like” operating deficit by 71% since 2016, when Boris Johnson stopped being mayor of London.

He also wrote that it had raised cash reserves by 16%.

The Labour mayor tweeted: “The PM has lied to the House of Commons.

“Before Covid I was fixing his mess at TfL- reducing the deficit by 71% since 2016.

The Labour mayor tweeted: “The PM has lied to the House of Commons”

“Covid-19 is the sole cause of TfL’s challenges. The PM wants to increase fares, the C-Charge & taxes – & end free travel for children and older Londoners.”
