Revised property tax rate will not burden ordinary men: Kozhikode corporation mayor

KOZHIKODE: Kozhikode corporation mayor Thottathil Raveendran said that the introduction of property tax revision after a gap of 25 years will not burden ordinary men as the residential buildings having an area upto 2,000 square feet and constructed before 2016 were exempted from the revised tax rate.

Speaking to media persons in Kozhikode on Saturday, mayor said that the houses having 660 square feet need not remit any type of tax hence there will not be any burden of tax on the ordinary men. Mayor said that the corporation officials have almost completed the official process involved in issuing building numbers to commercial buildings, establishments and houses for the introduction of revised property tax with retrospective effect from 2016, April 1.

Mayor said that the public can remit the revised tax in five installments before March 31, 2020. Mayor said that the last tax revision in the corporation limit was done in 1994. He said that the tax revision was done giving special thrust to residential buildings and educational institutions. He said that the civic body has already set up helpdesks at the corporation zonal offices of Cheruvannur-Nallalam, Elathur and Beypore and main office to rectify anomalies and to resolve public complaints related to tax revision.

Based on the revised tax rate, it has proposed Rs 14 per square meter for residential building fall in the limit of primary zone. The finance standing committee has proposed Rs 90 per square meter for commercial buildings within 100 square meters and Rs 105 for commercial buildings that occupies more than 100 square meter areas. The rate is Rs 90 for the super markets within 200 square meter and Rs 150 per square meter for the super markets and malls above 200 square meters. The rate is Rs 40 per square meter for other industry purposes, Rs 75 for office buildings, Rs 16 for education institutions, Rs 20 for the hospitals and Rs 500 for mobile towers.
