Raphael Varane 'really excited' by Man Utd plans and has Man City and Liverpool theory

Varane: All you need to know about Man Utd-linked defender

Manchester United‘s next signing Raphael Varane is “really excited” about moving to Old Trafford and is convinced his new club can immediately contend for the Premier League title and other major honours, it has been claimed. The France international reportedly thinks United’s summer plans are helping them to build a “top, top team”.

That’s according to Fabrizio Romano, with Varane imminently set to become United’s second major signing of the summer transfer window after £78million winger Jadon Sancho.

The Red Devils could pay a guaranteed amount as little as £34m for the French centre-back, who is out of contract at Real Madrid in 2022, with the rest of the fee made up in add-ons.

The signing of the World Cup winner has caused huge excitement among the United fanbase with Varane long regarded as one of the best centre-halves in Europe.

And the addition of the world-class 28-year-old added to the signing of Sancho, another player widely considered to be in the top bracket in his position, has stirred hopes of a title challenge this season.

United have not won the league since 2013 and have struggled to maintain a serious tilt at England’s top flight crown since then, with neighbours Manchester City by contrast increasingly dominant, winning four titles and not once finishing below the Red Devils.

But Romano says a major part of Varane’s desire to link up with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side is because he thinks they are capable of instantly ending their four-year wait for silverware.

And Varane is said to think United can overcome champions City, Liverpool – who won the league in 2019-20 – and reigning Champions League holders Chelsea to reign supreme in England’s top flight come next May.

Romano told The United Stand: “Varane was not doing this just because of money. Of course money is a part of life but he was not making this decision because of money.

“He wanted to try something new. He said to Real Madrid, ‘If you can find an agreement with Manchester United I will be happy because I’m not extending the contract.’

“This was his position. It’s about the challenge, he wants to try something new. He feels Manchester United have something special to him.

“Alex Ferguson was going to sign him 10 years ago, it was really, really close and he has been always with this United opportunity. They’ve always counted on the player so he felt something special in this opportunity.

“That’s why all the rumours about other clubs, Paris Saint-Germain, Chelsea, Tottenham, were not concrete because Varane only wanted to join United.

“His priority was the Premier League in general but with United as the biggest opportunity. That’s why he was really, really tempted by this chance.

“He’s convinced United are building a top, top team. He’s convinced that they can win immediately this season. That’s why the player is really excited.”

The Manchester Evening News say France international Varane is so excited about his move to Manchester that he has been watching footage of United from last season.

Last term United leaked 44 goals in 38 Premier League games including 18 goals from set-pieces across all competitions.

But Solskjaer and co. hope that installing Varane as captain Harry Maguire’s new partner in central defence can help eliminate their problems at the back.

United boss Solskjaer signed a new contract just last week to keep him at the club until 2024 and said: “It is an exciting time for Manchester United, we have built a squad with a good balance of youth and experienced players that are hungry for success.

“Manchester United wants to be winning the biggest and best trophies and that’s what we are all striving for.

“We have improved, both on and off the pitch, and that will continue over the coming seasons. I can’t wait to get out in front of a packed Old Trafford and get this campaign started.”

While United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward said: “Ole and his staff have worked tirelessly putting the foundations in place for long-term success on the pitch.

“The results of that have become increasingly visible over the past two seasons and we are all looking forward to seeing this exciting team develop further in the years ahead.

“What is especially pleasing is the way this progress has been achieved with a blend of young, homegrown talent and top-class recruits, playing attacking football in the best traditions of Manchester United.
