Preparing for convergence

A river sprouts from the mountain, flows down to the plain, and travels its way through forests, villages and towns to the ocean. The river entering the ocean marks the end of a journey through different terrains, rough and smooth. Similarly, humans pass through different phases of life – joy and sorrow, pain and pleasure – and eventually merge with the Supreme Being. It is the inevitable truth.

Recognising that the unavoidable end of human life is convergence with the Supreme Being, Rabindranath Tagore wrote, ‘All that I am, that I have, that I hope and all my love have ever flowed towards thee…. One final glance from thine eyes and my life will be thine own.’

Ultimate union of self with the Supreme Consciousness underlines the need for preparation for the momentous meet. This preparation does not lie in simply practicing religious rituals. It requires pursuing the path of spirituality, which grooms one for the unification with the Supreme Lord at the end of life’s journey. This is the path that helps to inculcate in one’s mind and heart the eternal truth – God is one by whatever name you call, and He exists in every being; and all that happens is by His will, and nothing in life is permanent.

Spirituality leads to realisation of God as the ultimate goal of life, and facilitates union of oneself with the Supreme Lord.
