Pleasant Valley gets rematch with Shasta in D-II semifinal – Chico Enterprise-Record

The last time the Pleasant Valley High football team took on Shasta, it was the Wolves that got the edge with a 21-20 victory.

The game came down to the wire as a potential game-winning 27-yard field goal from PV failed on a bad snap.

Friday, the Vikings travel up to Redding and will match up once again with the Wolves in the Northern Section Division II semifinal. The game kicks off at 7 p.m.

PV has had plenty of rest heading into Friday’s game. The No. 3-seeded Vikings last played on Nov. 1 in the Almond Bowl, then had a first-round bye in the playoffs after Red Bluff High had opted out of the postseason.

Both teams are pretty evenly matched with 5-5 records.

In the Oct. 4 game against No. 2 Shasta, sophomore quarterback Ian Guanzon completed 9-of-14 passes for 123 yards and a touchdown. Senior running back Junior Rivera led the ground game with 25 carries for 97 yards and one score. Senior Austin York led in receiving with two catches for 51 yards and a touchdown.

If PV were to exact revenge and get the win, the Vikings would be headed to their second-straight section championship game.

Foothill (6-5) at Chico (9-1): The top-seeded Panthers will host a Nov. 8 rematch with the No. 4 Cougars.

Chico earned the 44-23 win in its regular-season finale, which also allowed the Panthers to win the Eastern Athletic League title outright.

Jake Hamman, the junior quarterback for Chico, had a standout game completing 11-of-14 passes for 186 yards and three touchdowns. Hamman connected with senior wide receiver Abe Del Real for two scores, one for 53 yards and another for 48. On the ground, senior Jalen Johnson had nine carries for 67 yards and one touchdown.

The Panthers are trying to advance to their third-straight section championship game. If PV and Chico were to both win Friday night, it’d set up an Almond Bowl rematch in the championship game on Nov. 30.

Paradise (11-0) at West Valley (11-0): The battle between two undefeated teams has had plenty of drama surrounding it heading into Friday’s Division III semifinal.

Paradise will be playing without six players after they were suspended for unsportsmanlike conduct and entering the field during a scrum in the Bobcats’ 56-0 win over Live Oak on Nov. 15.

Paradise High officials filed an appeal for four players’ suspensions, but the suspensions were upheld by the section Thursday night.

But the fourth-seeded Bobcats continue on their mission for a section championship against top-seeded West Valley.

Paradise last took on West Valley on Sept. 14, 2018, at Om Wraith Field and the Eagles were able to pull off a 19-13 victory. The Bobcats scored all of their points in the second half as then-seniors Colby Cline and Dominic Wiggins ran in for touchdowns.

The winner of Friday’s game will move on to play the winner between No. 2 Sutter and No. 3 Lassen.

Los Molinos (7-3) at Biggs (9-1): The Wolverines earned a first-round bye after earning the No. 2 seed in Division V.

Both teams faced off on Sept. 13, with Biggs coming from behind to score 20 unanswered points for a 20-8 win.

Both squads rely heavily on the ground game, with Biggs’ go-to running back being Shavon Gramps-Green and Los Molinos relying on Hunter Landingham.
