Peter Wright has hit back at anyone questioning his place in the Premier League this season, labelling the Masters a ‘Mickey Mouse tournament’ in the process.

Snakebite was selected in the eight-man field for the Premier League despite a disappointing 2023 and an early exit from the 2024 World Championship.

Wright did win the European Championship last season, which helped him into the lucrative Premier League, but some suggested Chris Dobey was more deserving of a spot due to his consistently good performances over the campaign.

The two-time world champion emphatically disagrees and dismissed the idea that Dobey deserved a place ahead of him, pointing to the fact that Hollywood’s only televised title was last year’s Masters.

Wright had just beaten Krzysztof Ratajski in the last 16 of this year’s Masters when he went on something of a rant, hitting out at ITV commentator Chris Mason for putting Dobey’s claim forward.

‘It was to shut Chris Mason up, thinking Chris Dobey should be in the Premier League,’ said Wright. ‘What’s he won? He’s won the Masters, a Mickey Mouse tournament. That’s all he’s won.

‘Has he won the European? Has he won a proper major? No he hasn’t. Well, he shouldn’t be in the Premier League.

‘Yes he’s the better player the last year, so what? What’s he won? I’ve won two world titles, two World Cups, two Europeans, Matchplay and whatever else.’

The 53-year-old admits that Luke Humphries’ incredible run of form which saw him win four major titles in recent months, helped his Premier League cause, but is making no apologies for it.

‘I’ve already said I’m lucky to get in the Premier League,’ said Snakebite. ‘It’s because of Luke Humphries winning four tournaments at the end, it’s not my fault everyone else didn’t try and stop him. I’m going to start playing darts properly in the Premier League and shut everyone up.

‘I feel more determined to shut all these boys up in the back room who think they should be in the Premier League. Work hard. Win stuff.’

Wright will return for the final day of Masters action on Sunday where he plays either Humphries or Stephen Bunting in the quarter-finals.
