Pep Guardiola revealed Kevin De Bruyne was in a significant amount of pain after suffering an ankle injury during Manchester City’s FA Cup semi-final defeat against Chelsea.

The Belgium international has been the driving force behind his side’s outstanding season so far, but their quadruple dream came to a limp end on Saturday at Wembley.

Guardiola made eight changes to the team which reached the Champions League semi finals in midweek following a landmark win against Borussia Dortmund, but City failed to find their customary fluency.

De Bruyne, meanwhile, was taken off just three minutes into the second half after landing awkwardly on his ankle and is now likely to be a major doubt for next weekend’s Carabao Cup final against Tottenham.

Speaking about his talisman’s injury after the game, Guardiola said: ‘I don’t know right now, it doesn’t look good. He has pain we will see tomorrow we will make a test and we will see.’

On a largely lacklustre performance, meanwhile, Guardiola added: ‘We played a good last 15 minutes.

‘We had struggled to find our place in the pockets but congratulates Chelsea, tight game.

‘We arrived sometimes in that position but after that we didn’t create.

‘We conceded the goal but after we reacted well, especially after Phil Foden and Ilkay Gundogan came in. The team that defends with eight players in the final third it is not easy. This type of game the margin is so tight.

‘In general we controlled well. We didn’t create many clear cut chances but we arrived more than them.’
