Paul Merson and David Seaman disagree over Kepa Arrizabalaga vs Maurizio Sarri

Paul Merson believes Maurizio Sarri must drop Kepa Arrizabalaga after his behaviour in the Carabao Cup final – but David Seaman disagrees with his former Arsenal team-mate.

Kepa defied Sarri’s orders by refusing to be substituted before Manchester City triumphed in Sunday’s penalty shootout, with Willy Caballero waiting on the touchline to replace the Spain international.

While Kepa has since played down the incident as a ‘misunderstanding’, former Arsenal and England star Merson thinks Sarri must set a precedent by punishing the goalkeeper.

Chelsea have already fined Kepa a week’s wages but Merson has called on Sarri to axe the 24-year-old ahead of the side’s clash with Tottenham.

‘I think the manager has to stay strong and tell him he’s not playing – he’s got to,’ Merson told Sky Sports.

‘If you’re the manager then you’ve got to tell him you’ve shown me no respect otherwise the rest of the players will be thinking “wow, come on”.’

Merson recalled an incident when he was punished for laughing at George Graham during his playing days at Arsenal.

‘I laughed at him once and I didn’t play for two months,’ he said.

‘And, we played Huddersfield in the League Cup and I walked straight down the tunnel. I didn’t play for a month after that. I didn’t show enough respect and got punished so you don’t do it again, although I done it twice… so maybe don’t use me as an example!

‘You’ve got to give your manager the respect.’

Seaman thinks Chelsea have to stick with Kepa (Picture: Getty)

Ex-Arsenal ‘keeper Seaman slammed Kepa’s behaviour at Wembley but believes Sarri must stick with the Spaniard for the sake of Chelsea’s top-four hopes.

‘If Chelsea aren’t going for the top four it’s an easy decision but they are, so they’ve got to play their best team,’ Seaman said.

‘It may show a bit of a weakness in Sarri but Kepa should play.’
