Arteta responds to being named September’s manager of the month

Arsenal legend Patrick Vieira has delivered his verdict on current Gunners boss Mikel Arteta, who has come under fire for his management this season.

Arteta saw his side start the Premier League season with three successive defeats, as they failed to score a single goal.

They finally got off the mark with narrow wins over Norwich City and Burnley before a statement victory over Tottenham Hotspur in the North London Derby.

Their season is now back on track, but that has not stopped many questioning if Arteta is the right man to lead Arsenal back to the top of the Premier League.

His next chance to prove he deserves to carry on his project at the Gunners will come on Monday night.

Vieira will be the man facing him in the opposition dugout, with the Frenchman having taken over at Crystal Palace in the summer.

Though they never crossed paths as team-mates, Vieira and Arteta did face each other in the Premier League in their playing careers.

And Vieira, who captained Arsenal to three Premier League titles, has given his backing to the Spaniard.

Is Mikel Arteta the right man to bring the Premier League back to Arsenal? Comment below.

The Palace boss believes that Arteta has similar characteristics to Didier Deschamps, who led France to the World Cup in 2018.

“When he was playing, you knew that Didier was going to be a football manager. And I think Arteta is quite in the same kind of mindset,” Vieira said.

“He (Arteta) was a really good player. I think he had a wonderful career. And he learned the job before getting a chance at Arsenal.

“I think he did everything the right way. When he was under pressure, he did quite well because he’s always been calm and composed.

Vieira has backed Arteta to be the right man for the Gunners

“Winning and losing games… the way he was conducting himself is a really good sign of a person who has everything under control.”

Vieira spent nine years at Arsenal as a player and Monday night will be the first time he returns to the club as a manager.

But he has insisted that he will put his past allegiances to one side for the Premier League clash as he focuses on Palace.

“I’m really looking forward to it. I had the chance to play for this football club for nine years,” he added.

“I arrived at this football club as a kid and I left as a man. This is the club where I played my best football, so obviously going back there will be emotional.

“But I will put that on the side because what will be important for us is to perform well and try to get points.”

Vieira has won only one league game so far in charge of Palace, though they have performed better than results suggest.

They will move above the Gunners if they win at the Emirates, while Arsenal can climb as high as seventh if they pick up three points.
