Opinion | The Virginia Department of Transportation's odd approach to safety – The Washington Post

The Sept. 13 Metro article “Following their road to safety” reported on Gum Springs’ demonstration against the egregious widening of Richmond Highway through its community. The article quoted Virginia Department of Transportation spokeswoman Ellen Kamilakis as saying that VDOT aimed to improve safety by adding lanes through Hybla Valley, “thereby reducing congestion that can lead to crashes.” If less congestion were safer, we would not have had the horrible spike in deaths and injuries per mile traveled that we have had in the past 18 months, with many fewer cars on the road during lockdown.
