Olivier Giroud ‘happy’ for Kepa Arrizabalaga after Thomas Tuchel’s Chelsea lifeline

Olivier Giroud says he is ‘happy’ for Kepa Arrizabalaga after Chelsea’s record signing kept a clean sheet in a rare Premier League start as the Blues beat Newcastle United.

Kepa – who Chelsea signed for £72million in 2018 – has endured a difficult spell at Stamford Bridge and lost his place in the first-team to Edouard Mendy under former manager Frank Lampard.

Thomas Tuchel has handed Kepa two successive starts and while he still views Mendy as his first-choice goalkeeper, the situation suddenly does not seem so terminal for the Spain international.

Giroud and Timo Werner scored first-half goals for Chelsea against Newcastle as they clinched a routine win to climb to fourth in the Premier League.

‘I’m happy for him,’ Giroud said of Kepa. ‘He’s stayed focused on his job and committed to what he has to do.

‘Every day at training he is working hard to be ready when the manager will ask him to play and he played very well I think, like the team.’

Chelsea were ninth when Tuchel replaced Lampard as manager but the team have shown huge improvements under the former PSG and Borussia Dortmund boss.

Giroud added: ‘We need to keep it up and carry on like that. We are doing well obviously and try to play with our game intentions.

‘The manager wants us to play in a certain way and we just keep doing it in training and try to do it again in the game.

‘We feel very good, very comfortable on the pitch and have a good understanding, but there is always room for improvement, so we want to carry on doing that.

‘It’s good to be in the top four now. We are aiming to stay there and keep going.’

Asked what Chelsea did well in their 2-0 win over struggling Newcastle, Giroud said: ‘We started well again with great intentions to play between the lines.

‘We created quite a lot of chances, could have put the game to bed before, but we are very pleased with the clean sheet and we carry on our good work.’
