Ole Gunnar Solskjaer rubbished Liverpool’s title credentials in briefing with Manchester United squad

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer gave a scathing assessment of Liverpool to his Manchester United players prior to taking on the Merseysiders on Sunday and does not believe they will win the title.

The Red Devils had to settle for a goalless draw at Old Trafford after they were ravaged by injuries in the first half, with a point enough for Liverpool to return to the top of the Premier League table.

However, The Sun report that Solskjaer is unimpressed with Jurgen Klopp’s side and made his thoughts clear at his team’s pre-match briefing.

In fact, the Norwegian – who is the favourite to land the United job permanently after only losing one of 14 games – believes his United side are superior to Liverpool and questioned their credentials.

In particular, Solskjaer highlighted three key weakness that will hold Liverpool back: firstly, they can only play on the counter attack and are not effective unless they face an offensive team.

Secondly, they fail to break down teams with a short passing game, and, finally, as an extension of that, they lack any true creativity with no real playmaker.

The 26-year-old also feels that Liverpool’s style is reliant on taking the lead and then counter-attacking.

A dressing room source said that Solskjaer was very blunt with his players and does not believe Liverpool have enough quality to beat Manchester City to the title.

He regards his team as a better outfit – something that was justified as their injury-hit side comfortably kept a clean sheet on Sunday – and told the squad that Liverpool are ‘very one dimensional’.

Liverpool have largely played without a proper playmaker since Philippe Coutinho swapped Anfield for Barcelona over a year ago, while Xherdan Shaqiri had little impact off the bench at Old Trafford.
