Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has played down suggestions Eric Bailly is unhappy at Manchester United and refusing to sign a contract extension, instead insisting talks are ongoing.

The Ivory Coast international is believed to be disappointed that he has been overlooked so often this season by his manager, making just one Premier League appearance since the end of January.

Bailly is out of contract in 2022, when he can leave Old Trafford on a free transfer, and is sceptical over whether United actually want to keep him or are just looking to preserve his value.

The 27-year-old is likely to find himself even further down the pecking order next season, with United looking to bring in a new centre-back over the summer transfer window.

But Solskjaer is adamant there is no issue with Bailly and remains optimistic the defender will opt to extend his contract, even suggesting he could be involved in Sunday’s Premier League game against Burnley.

Asked if he could shed any light on the situation surrounding Bailly, Solskjaer explained: ‘Eric has played well when he’s played.

‘I know there’s been speculations, we’re talking to him about his contract. I don’t see any issues really.’

Bailly is yet to link up with the United squad following the international break after testing positive for coronavirus while away with the Ivory Coast last month, but Solskjaer hopes to be able to call on the defender once again very soon.

He continued: ‘Eric has been isolating back home in the Ivory Coast, he’s back to England now.

‘We hope that he can be available for the weekend, hopefully he can train [on Friday] depending on how he feels within himself.

‘But he’s had his [coronavirus] tests so we need to get the conformation that he’s still negative.’

United eased past La Liga side Granada in the Europa League quarter-finals on Thursday night to set up a semi-final clash with Roma in the next round and they return to domestic action against Burnley as they look to cement their place in second spot behind rivals Manchester City.
