Ole Gunnar Solskjaer provides injury update on Edinson Cavani ahead of Young Boys clash

Edinson Cavani is edging closer to a return after the Manchester United striker picked up an injury during the international break.

The Uruguay international, who scored 17 goals for United last term, has managed just 37 minutes of United’s new season, coming off the bench against Wolves.

The striker was absent from the squad that travelled to Switzerland for Tuesday’s Champions League group stage opener against Young Boys.

Having not travelled to South America during the international break, Cavani remained in Manchester where he took part in a behind-closed-doors friendly against Stoke City.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer explained on Tuesday his absence from the squad has been down to a knock picked up in that game, but hopes to have the 34-year-old available again soon.

‘He had a slight strain during the international week after the in-house game we played,” Solskjaer said.

‘He is hopefully back with us soon. He’s working hard to get back.’

United have taken 10 points from a possible 12 in their opening four Premier League games with Champions League fixtures now thrown into the mix.

But following the summer additions of Jadon Sancho, Raphael Varane and Cristiano Ronaldo, Solskjaer insists there can be no excuses when it comes to keeping the squad fresh.

“I can’t look at the squad and say we’ve played a game in midweek and we’re tired,’ the United boss said.

‘Players are fitter now and we’ve been very robust over the years and improved a lot the way we dealt with the pandemic situation and the games coming thick and fast.’
