That floor is known for housing the jail’s most difficult-to-manage inmates, The Oklahoman newspaper of Oklahoma City reported.
Officials confirmed for Fox News that one of the inmates holding the corrections officer hostage was shot and killed by Oklahoma City police officers.
The officer had been taken to the hospital for treatment, but the extent of his injuries was not immediately known, Lt. Wayland Cubit of the Oklahoma City Police Department said.
However, the officer managed to leave the jail under his own power after the 4:30 p.m. incident, Jail Administrator Greg Williams told The Oklahoman.
The officer was delivering medication to inmates when he was attacked, tied up, and had his keys taken away, according to local station KWTV-DT News 9.
Under normal circumstances, the corrections officer would be accompanied by a medical staffer during medication delivery, but Williams told The Oklahoman that no one else was injured during the incident.
In a series of videos recorded by one of the perpetrators holding the officer hostage, another man talks to the camera while watching over his shoulder.
“We can’t take showers,” the inmate on camera is heard saying above shouts coming from the floor below.
In another video, the man filming the incident is heard explaining the officer “ain’t got nothing to do with this. He just so happens to be a product of the situation.”
Though the officer appears to be unharmed, at one point the on-camera inmate paces back and forth before coming to a resting position next to the officer, and placing an unidentifiable object on the back of his neck.
Officers appeared to be monitoring the situation from the floor below.
When police and sheriff’s deputies arrived at the scene, they initially attempted to de-escalate the situation. But when officers saw the inmate holding an object against the corrections officer’s neck, they fired at the inmate, killing him, Oklahoma County Sheriff Tommie Johnsion III told The Oklahoman.
Oklahoma City police Chief Wade Gourley said his department would be leading an investigation into how the incident happened, the newspaper reported.
After the incident, a group of protesters gathered outside the jail, complaining about conditions that inmates allegedly faced behind bars.
