NSW Cyber Security Innovation Node, IBM partner on Open P-TECH platform – iTWire

The NSW Cyber Security Innovation Node (NSWCSIN) is partnering with IBM to bolster its existing ‘Cyber-STEM’ workforce program, with 68 NSW Secondary Schools to adopt IBM’s Open P-TECH (Pathways in Technology) platform.

NSWCSIN says the partnership will provide students access to online learning on technical and professional competencies and enable them to earn digital badges that demonstrate their newly acquired skills.

Open P-TECH is designed to help students working from home and in regional areas to obtain equal access to cyber security and technology education resources.

NSWCSIN says that on the new Open P-TECH platform, courses will be offered to teachers and students at no charge, with delivery via digital channels – with topics on emerging technologies, like cyber security and cloud computing, and professional competencies, like design thinking and agile.

And as students earn ‘digital badges,’ they can add them to their resumes to showcase to potential employers, as well as education institutions.

“The NSWCSIN has already engaged with 68 NSW schools as part of our existing Cyber-STEM outreach,” said Todd Williams, Director, NSWCSIN.

“At a time when students are working from their homes, we plan to support the roll-out of the platform to these schools. It is a great opportunity to develop much-needed cyber skills through a purpose-built channel.”

Jade Moffat, Corporate Social Responsibility Lead at IBM A/NZ said, “Recent events have forced many people to work from home, as well as many schools to shut down, or children learning remotely”.

“With this dramatic change of circumstance, many parents and teachers may find themselves searching for stimulating content for students. IBM’s new Open P-TECH platform offers free digital learning journeys designed to support young people learning the tech and professional skills of tomorrow.”

IBM co-founded the P-TECH School Model in 2010 and NSWCSIN says it continues to steward the “brick-and-mortar reform” effort forward – with P-TECH now launched in 220 schools across 24 countries, including Australia.

“There are over 600 industry partners and 150,000 students globally affiliated with P-TECH. Open P-TECH expands access to some of the key learning offered in P-TECH schools.”
