No Ida school makeup days needed – McComb Enterprise Journal

Many students in Southwest Mississippi who missed school days because of Hurricane Ida won’t have to make up at least some of those days.

Students in North Pike and South Pike won’t make up any of the days for which the schools were closed in those districts. North Pike was closed three days, while South Pike was closed the entire week.

In both districts, the superintendents and business managers cited district policy based on state law that allows the districts to deviate from the state-mandated requirement of 180 days of instruction, in case of a natural disaster with an emergency declaration by the governor.

Final approval of the deviation is up to the State Board of Education, after the districts submit formal plans for changes to the school calendar. Such approval is usually pro forma.

Both districts also approved administrative pay for all employees for the missed days.

South Pike Superintendent Dr. Donna Scott noted that the district could not do that if the days were going to be made up at another time, because employees would be paid under their normal contracts for the made-up days.

“We couldn’t afford to pay for working those days and paying for the missed days,” Scott said.

In Walthall County, —which, like South Pike, was out the entire week of Aug. 30-Sept. 3 — Superintendent Wade Carney said school board members decided in a special called meeting last week to forgive three of the missed days and approved administrative pay for those days.

The remaining days will be made up on the bad-weather days built into the district calendar, he said.

Amite County Superintendent Don Cuevas said he would recommend to his board that the district forgive two days and approve administrative pay for those days.

Amite County students will then make up three days, if the board approves.

McComb Superintendent Dr. Cederick Ellis did not respond to questions from the Enterprise-Journal.
