What if there was a machine that you could ask for all the information you need before you even get out of bed – oh, wait, there is, and her name is Alexa.

Amazon’s virtual assistant was released in 2014, and has since become a staple feature in tech lovers’ homes, as well as the subject of strange requests. For instance, did you know that Alexa can help you apply for a passport?

The gadget is also intuitive; a function called Routines was introduced to the product in 2018, which tells Alexa when someone is at your house – because she’s connected to your doorbell – and she can also tell when you’re headed to bed, as she picks up light changes.

There are the basics too, such as making phone calls, playing music and providing tips, as well as more complicated tasks.

She can even turn the microwave on to cook your ready-made meal – though you’ll have to put it in there yourself.

Essentially, Alexa exists to do tasks that you can’t be bothered with, especially when you’re short for time or really tired – like in the mornings.

So, what should you request as you prepare for the day ahead? We find out the most useful and popular questions to ask.

Good morning, Alexa

Do you have an inquisitive nature?

Then make sure to say ‘good morning’ to your virtual assistant – this phrase will trigger Alexa into providing a fun fact about the date of the day – an excellent way to pick up tidbits that you can impress your colleagues with.

Alexa, what time is it?

First things first, find out what time it is – no one is going to care about daily facts if you’re late for work.

The best part about this function is that you don’t need to open your eyes to check your watch (and by doing so, disrupt your rest) unless of course it’s time to get up.

Alexa, what’s the weather like today?

British weather is fickle. The sun might be shining through your window, but then you step outside and instantly regret leaving your warm coat at home.

It’s also helpful to know if it’s going to rain, so you can avoid spending ages doing your hair, only to walk out and have it get completely ruined half an hour later.

Alexa, what’s happening in the news?

There are two functions to choose from here; Alexa can either give you a ‘Flash Briefing’ of the top headlines for the day or offer a longer news coverage summary.

It frees up your hands too, so you can get dressed and make breakfast while getting updated on what’s going on in the world.

Another bonus is that if you already know the top news by the time you walk out the front door, you don’t have to spend your commute reading about it (in other words, you can relax, have a mini-nap or read a book, instead).

Alexa, play my morning playlist

OK, so it’s not technically a question, but if you don’t fancy listening to the news (it can get a bit glum at times) you might as well get yourself in a positive mood by having Alexa play your favourite tunes.

And yes, you can hook the device up to Spotify.

Alexa, open Tube Status

Is there signal failure on the Circle Line again? Do you need to get up earlier to grab the bus?

Get a full briefing on all Tube lines, or ask something more specific, such as ‘Alexa, ask Tube Status about the Northern line’. Alternatively, if you need bus information, say ‘Alexa, open London buses’.

Pro? You’ll never be late for work again. Con? You no longer have an excuse to be late for work.

If you’re driving, you want ‘Alexa, what’s the traffic like?’.

Alexa, what’s on my schedule today?

Do you write your tasks down in a notebook or calendar? Then this one isn’t for you, because there won’t be much for Alexa to tell you.

But for those of us who keep a digital schedule, it can be useful.

Like when you’re told you have a meeting with a client, and not to forget that very important presentation that you spent all night working on.

Alexa, what was yesterday’s football score?

Replace football with your team name, and you’ll get all the latest info.

The same goes for other sports, so if rugby is more your jam, you’re covered.

Alexa, announce that it’s time to go

Yes, we know this one isn’t strictly a question either, but it’s so useful we just had to include it.

If you’re sharing your household with your family or friends, and you’re all leaving at the same time, there’s a nifty feature called ‘Announcement’ that lets everyone know it’s time to head out the door.

Say ‘announce’, and whatever message you give Alexa will be played across all the speakers that she is hooked up to in your house.
