New India Assurance releases guidelines for Rs 50 lakh insurance coverage for health care providers

New India Assurance released a detailed guideline of the Rs 50 lakh insurance coverage provided to each of the 22.12 lakh health care providers fighting the Covid-19 outbreak across the country on Monday.

The move comes following finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman’s announcement regarding the same while unveiling the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Yojana on March 26.

As per the release, the tailor made comprehensive personal accident cover, which includes accidental loss of life on account of contracting Covid-19, will be valid for 90 days from March 30.

Under the guidelines, the coverage will cover 22.12 lakh public healthcare providers, community healthcare workers and private healthcare staff who may have to be in direct contact and care of Covid-19 patients.

In case of accidental death or death due to complications arising from accidentally contracting Covid-19, the insurance amount will be paid to a beneficiary or nominee under the certification of the central or state government authorised authority.

The claims procedure will be finalised by the insurer along with the ministry of finance and the ministry of health and family welfare (MOHFW).

On March 29, the MOHFW had entrusted the issuance of the insurance coverage announced by the finance minister to New India Assurance, the release mentioned, adding that the premium payment process had been initiated.

Additionally, the finance minister again took to Twitter to reassure citizens that all banks will provide uninterrupted services including stocked ATMs, functioning branches and active banking correspondents.

“All banks are ensuring that their branches are kept open, ATMs filled up & are working. Banking correspondents are active. Social distancing is respected & sanitizers are provided where necessary. Just in case, any assistance/clarification is required contact @DFSFightsCorona,” Sitharaman tweeted on Monday.
