A NEW holiday resort dubbed “Center Parcs by the sea” is to be built on the former Pleasure Island theme park.
The full plans reveal 250 holiday lodges, a 148-bedroom hotel as well as a water-sports activity lake near the Cleethorpes seafront.
Also on-site will be a Lidl superstore, petrol station and drive-through coffee shop, as well as a food hall with 25 pop-up restaurants making the most of the 57-acre site.
The hotel will have an entertainment centre for nearly 1,000 people, and the large lake will be able to offer activities such as paddle-boarding, canoeing and kayaking, with the eco-lodges overlooking the water.
Ming Yeung, who is behind the new site along with friend Adrian Smith, told local media: “People who live in the area often take for granted the natural beauty of our coastline and beach. It is a fantastic place to be.
“It will put Cleethorpes back on the map as an up market holiday destinations and move on from the hotdogs, rock, and kiss-me-quick traditional resort to be more like a Center Parcs-by-the-sea.”
He added: “The stay-cation market is prevalent due to Covid, but it was growing before lockdown. Even local people who live in Grimsby and Cleethorpes and surrounding areas want to have their bolt holes.”
The new site hopes to “provide new all-weather tourism and leisure uses” across the development as well as create 300 new jobs in the area.
The first of the lodges could open as soon as next year if the application is accepted, with further phases opening in 2022.
Pleasure Island closed after 26 years in 2016, with many of the old rides and attractions sold off.
A £100m new adventure resort is to open next year with indoor and outdoor activities, wellness centre as well as chalets and hotels.
PEAK, located in Derbyshire, hopes to open phase one of the new park which is being built on the 300-acre Birchall Estate in Chesterfield.
A £3.5bn theme park in Kent called London Resort is currently in development, with it being the first theme park built from scratch since Disneyland Paris.
